I hope that you will all agree with me that last months judges Fiona and Andrew were absolutely brilliant and we were very honoured to have them judge for us at our humble little club. This month we really do need to be rolling out the red carpet because the calibre of judges coming to our club is absolutely astounding and it is all a big thanks to Peter Myers and of course the judges themself.

The judge for September stands up there as one of the best wedding photographers IN THE WORLD, Nick Ghionis. Nick travels the world taking images and talking to audiences so we are very fortunate to have volunteer his time to judge our images. Here is Nick’s biography and please feel free to click the logo at the end to visit Nick’s Site:

Nick Ghionis is an extraordinary talent and one of Australia’s most sought after wedding photographers. WPPI 1st place WINNER for the past three years ( Bride and Groom, Fashion and Science and Industrial) Also winning first place in the humour category in wedding the same year . His multi award winning photography both nationally and internationally, sees him at the helm of XSiGHT photography, one of the most respected wedding & portrait studio’s in Australia. Nick’s passionate approach to photography and business makes him an industry leader that has seen him at the top of his field for the last 10 years. His glamorous and emotive images, are admired by his clients and peers alike.

Nick along with his wife Sharifa are the owners of the flourishing wedding and portrait studio: XSiGHT Photography based in the inner Melbourne suburb of Fairfield.

Wedding photography and portraits remain Nick’s great love, giving him scope to be creative and to work with people. “…Wedding photography gives a photographer the privilege of being around people at very intimate moments. We are invited to share and capture the moments, moods and events that surround a wedding. It’s so much more than just the wedding ceremony, it’s the joy and tension that goes into that event and the celebrations that follow…” Nick says of his successful XSiGHT business

On Tuesday 16th August we had the well known photographer Ian Rolfe visit and give us a presentation on landscape photography and the light. Ian opened his presentation to a packed Wadham House with a slideshow of his landscape images which were truly stunning. It was immediately obvious to us all that this man knew how to find and capture the light and use it to his advantage in his work. Ian went on to talk about the different types of light as well as composition, exposure, Depth of Field and many other factors that effect all of the shots that we take. Ian showed us that it is the work prior to taking the image that is important and less towards the post production that we have all come to expect from images.

Ian finished his talk with a slideshow of King Island and passed on some information about the tours that he runs there, four times per year.

Ian Rolfe Photography

All in all we had a very good evening and I think we all came away with something that we never knew prior to it. So thank you very much to Ian and we look forward to seeing his techniques applied to shots submitted into future club competitions.

Hi All.

As mentioned at our meeting last night our monthly outing is to Marysville and it is this coming Sunday ( 7th August)

I’m reliably told it is 86Kms from Wadham House so you can make your own distance and time to travel calculations from your own abode. Of more importance however is that Vicki Moritz is going to meet us outside the new Marysville supermarket and act as our guide. From what I can glean from the lovely Vicki she has all the good photo shoot spots already soughted for us.

We meet near the supermarket entrance or foyer between 9;30 and 10AM. From memory the supermarket is on the left just before the river (creek). People have suggested its a 90 minute drive but I suspect by the time you wind through the hills it may be closer to 2 hours.

Wednesday 27th July saw the Knox Interclub Monochrome Competition held at Baronia West Primary School. This year there were eight clubs entered into the competition and 110 images split into 30 small prints, 40 large prints and 40 EDI images. Whilst Waverley didn’t manage to attain any place getters this year we didn’t disgrace ourselves. There were only 18 awards given 3 x 3rd place, 3 x 2nd place and 3 x 1st places plus a further 9 Highly Commendeds of which Waverley secured 4 as follows:

Ray Anderson – Wildebeest – Small Print Highly Commended
Dave Sumner – Rodeo – Large Print Highly Commended
Vicki Moritz – Puppies – Large Print Highly Commended
Alan Scott – Hay-Field – EDI Highly Commended

The HC Images are shown below and you can also see all of the images entered Here

I would like to say thank you to all of the Waverley Members who attended, we nearly outnumbered the host club I think. I would also like to thank those members who provided us with prints and EDI’s to enter.

The next competition is the Eastern Interclub in August, watch this space for details, hopefully with the correct date this time.

You have to agree that we have been extremely lucky over the last year with the judges that have been organised for us. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that we are the only amateur club in Victoria and possibly the whole of Australia that has had regular judges of this calibre from the professional photgraphy world. It is not only that we have had the cream of the crop all the way from Master Photographer Ian McKenzie through to the 2010 AIPP Photographer of the Year, Peter Coulson but it just gets better and better. I am very pleased to announce to you all that in August we have not one but two Master Photographers, Andrew and Fiona Harrison. They will be judging our Open competition and I think I can safely say that we will be in for yet another treat when we see their presentation. Passion8 have kindly put a small biography together for us so you all have an idea of what their work is like and what they like to shoot, there is also a link to their website should you wish to pay them a visit, just click the logo at the end of the post:

ANDREW – Director & Photographer – Master Photographer AIPP

Andrew started Passion8 Photography with Fiona in 2001. Andrew’s Sales & Marketing background has created a very solid business base for a thriving photographic studio. Andrew’s amazing creativity is evident in his competent shooting style and graphic design capabilities. His skill and flair for wedding photography is outstanding and has achieved many awards within the photographic industry.

Fiona completed her photography studies in 1989, yes 19 years ago! She is incredibly enthusiastic about capturing the moment with her wedding, baby, children & family portraits. Fiona’s patience with children is endearing and results in the most delightfully, natural & candid portraits of childhood. Fiona’s clients just keep coming back, from their wedding through to their teen’s portraits. Her images are her passion!

To those who didn’t attend the Monochrome workshop last night, you missed a very good session led by Pete which studied what makes an image a good B&W or monochrome. We studied 100 of the best B&W/Monochrome images before going into the different ways used to convert images from the ins and outs of B&W in camera to the many methods of PhotoShop. Pete treated us to some demonstrations with the assistance of Warren’s Photoshop Group members who had been working on this very subject the night before. We were able to compare several different methods, their advantages and disadvantages as well as visually compare the results. Anyone who simply desaturates an image to make it B&W should have been there to see why this isn’t the ideal method.

We also touched on creating monotone, duotone, tritone and quadtone images, where we would possibly use these and how the results differ.

Here is the link that Pete provided us with giving us the various methods of converting to B&W or monochrome and their pro’s and con’s Black and White Digital
