The course will run for 9 consecutive Monday nights (even on Public Holidays) and will be held at Wadham House in Mt. Waverley from 7:30 – 9:30pm. Topics covered will include: Camera Controls, Basic Camera Operation, Composition, Lighting, The mode dial, Exposure, Metering and Exposure Compensation. Classes will be limited to 6 students to allow for maximum interaction between pupils and teachers.

You will need to bring your camera with you every week which must be an SLR rather than a compact point and shoot camera. (If you’re unsure whether your camera is an SLR or not email me the make and model and I’ll let you know)

There will be 4 terms this year and they will run as follows:
Term 1: Monday 30th January – 26th March
Term 2: Monday 23rd April – 18th June
Term 3: Monday 16th July – 10th September
Term 4: Monday 8th October – 3rd December

As well as the 9 Monday night lessons each term will also include 2 night shoots on a different night.

The cost is $225 and includes membership to Waverley Camera Club for 2012. As a member of Waverley Camera Club you are also entitled to go to all club events including workshops and outings.

I am very happy to announce that the November workshop on the 15th will star two of our recent and very well received judges Andrew & Fiona Harrison.

Fiona and Andrew run Passion8 Photography (http://www.passion8photo.com.au/) and have very kindly agreed to pay a second visit to our club for a workshop evening.

The workshop will be on Posing & Lighting. It will be free for members which is a massive bonus as the Harrisons are much in demand as speakers.

I have absolutely no doubt that the evening will be hugely entertaining and highly educational so please clear a space in your diary and make sure you attend. Bring something on which to take notes, these guys are Masters in Photography and we will all have a fantastic opportunity to learn from them.

• The End of the Line

As you all should know this is my last year as President so you should get some decent topics from next year.

You can enter up to four images and the deadline is Friday the 2nd of December.

The main aim of this competition is to have fun and enjoy your photography. The winner will not necessarily be the most technically proficient image so don’t be thinking you’re not good enough to have your name on the most prestigious of all the end of year trophies. Get out there and have a go.

What I thought we could do to compliment that is to turn it into a wine and cheese evening. So the plan is: doors will open at 6:30, if I could have a few people to help me set up that’d be nice.

If you are coming then perhaps you could bring something to share with others in the way of food or drink.

On Tuesday night we are to be graced with a presentation by the well renowned photographer Ian Rolfe.
Ian is much in demand as a speaker (you’ll know why once you have seen him) and we are lucky to have him before he goes jetting
off around the world for the rest of the year. His speciality is landscape photography and you can check some of it out here:

It is with a sad heart that I have tell you all that one of the clubs prominent members, Roger Howell passed away on Sunday 3rd July 2011. I know that you all will join me in sending Roger’s partner Mary, our sincerest condolences.

Roger has been a prominent member of WCC since Feb 1997 and for as long as I’ve known him he has been a member of the committee. We will all miss his very large contribution to the club; he was always there with wise council, support or anything else that was needed. This may not have always been a visible contribution but I can say without a shadow of doubt that you ALL have benefited from his membership. Roger’s photographic knowledge and skills in mounting prints were second to none and he would always be happy to pass on this knowledge to members, new members and guests. It was always a pleasure to introduce guests to him.

You may not know it but Roger was the big driving force behind getting the Audio Visual Group into being and always had a very active role in the group, his latest creation being about ‘Orchids’ which you can see here. Roger was always an active participant in the club outings; I would always have a chuckle to myself when I saw him lugging behind him the largest camera bag known to man. A bag that which he had to replace with an equally sized wheeled version when things got too heavy for him to carry.

One thing I know is that I and others in the club will never forget Roger, his love and devotion to Mary, their relationship was a thing of beauty. Our hearts go out to her and both families in their time of grief.

If you feel like doing some shooting on Sunday morning be at the cafe at the Springvale Botanical Cemetery at 9:15am. The gates are open at 9:00am. Most roads seem to lead to the cafe so it should be easy to find if you’re not familiar with it’s location.

In case you were wondering photography is allowed as long as we are respectful of mourners. Because there is so much in the grounds you might like to do a recce before Sunday to scout out some locations.

If you haven’t then some explaining might be in order. A sound trigger will fire the flash when there’s enough sound to activate it. In the past we have popped balloons, smashed light bulbs and even blown up an apple. Because the trigger can react faster than any human being, and the duration of the flash is so short, we are able to capture the moment fairly easily.

If this sounds like fun and I can assure you it is you will need to bring your CAMERA and a TRIPOD. A longish lens is probably best so that we can get as many people shooting as possible. You should also bring something to shoot, please don’t rely on the same three or four people who always bring things because I have no idea whether they are going to turn up or not.

Some snooping around in Google will give you an idea of the kinds of things we are after, but please NO GUNS.
