Unfortunately this clashes with our portrait and flash photography group, but if you are not going along to that, please come along to the judging night to represent the club, and possibly learn a thing or two from the judge’s comments.

The judging of the Pakenham National is this Saturday. We are still waiting to hear if observers are permitted or not. If they are, details will be posted in the next day or so. Let Pete know if you are interested.

Finally, this Sunday is the first of August which means it is also time for our monthly Sunday outing. As the exhibition for the VIGEX 2010 Salon also opens on that day we have decided to head down to Geelong for the exhibition (at the Geelong Art Gallery, Little Malop Street, Geelong). We will meet at the gallery at 11am, have lunch somewhere around 1pm, then a photo shoot somewhere after lunch.

Waverley CC did rather well at the recent 4 Club where we won the aggregate for all three sections: digital, colour prints and monochrome prints. The other two interclubs we’ve just been in are the VAPS Interclub and the Camberwell Camera Club Mono Comp.

The VAPS Interclub is held once a year and is open to all Camera Clubs in Victoria. This year the exhibition of entries took place at the Muster in Apollo Bay. WCC finished mid table in each of the three sections. The entries are scored out of 15 points and each club gets to enter 5 images in each section.

In the Novice section, WCC got 45 points. The winner, Geelong Camera Club, had 55.

In the Open print section we received 45 points. The winner, Camberwell Camera Club, was awarded 57.

In the EDI section Waverley got 50 points while the first placed club was Southern Suburbs Photo Society with 60.

The judging of the Camberwell Interclub took place last Monday night and the judge was the well known Adrian Smith.

Apart from Camberwell four other clubs were invited to participate. The other clubs were Geelong, Frankston, Doncaster and ourselves. When I arrived at Camberwell and saw who the other clubs were I thought we would be lucky if we didn’t finish last in each section (large, small and EDI – all monochrome). At the recent VAPS interclub those other four clubs would all have been in the top five or six clubs overall. On top of that Geelong and Frankston both have well over 100 members.

It came as a very pleasant surprise then that we finished equal first in the EDI section. We got 66 points along with Camberwell and Geelong. In the large print section we had 59 while the winner, Frankston, had 65. Small prints was won by Doncaster with 64 while we had 60. So overall, while we did come last we certainly didn’t disgrace ourselves. What was most pleasing was the number of people were able to muster to attend the evening on very short notice.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in these competitions either as entrants or attendees at the judging evenings.

The next interclub will be the Knox Monochrome Interclub – stay tuned for more details.

Cheers,
Pete

Hi Guys,

We are in urgent need of some small prints for the Know B&W comp. We have to have the entries in to them by Tuesday 7th July 2009 and so far we have NONE.

Being a B&W comp the prints have to be monochrome. The image can be no larger than 5×7 inches. They must be matted and the matt can not be larger than 8×10. If you have anything we can enter (and I know some of you do) please deliver it to Albert Hutchison by Sunday night.

His address and telephone number is in the email sent to you all. The small print section of the Knox B&W is aimed at B graders so please don’t be thinking that you don’thave anything good enough to enter. If matting is the problem then ring me on the number supplied in the email and I will arrange to get the print from you and get it matted.

Pete Davies

So overall, a win by 1 point for Waverley Camera Club…(Cue…”We are the champions” by Queen). The “icing on the cake” was the fact that our own Teddy Tan won the individual award for best Monochrome print, and Tuck Leong won the individual award for best colour print, so well done Teddy & Tuck.

A great night, some excellent judging comments, and in the words of the judge “some absolutely excellent images”.
But despite the accolade of winning on the evening, the highlight for most WCC club members in attendance, and there were many, was the presentation of a club Life Membership to our very own Fred Bullock.

Congratulations Fred, from all the club members old and new who you have served so well over the years.

A more deserving award there could not possibly be!

A brief but informative introduction to 4-Club from the WCC President, Pete Davies.

There are competitions being run outside of WCC’s monthly comp and lots of photography clubs get together and stage inter club competitions. Waverley is involved in one known as 4 Club, every six months (usually April and October) we join up with Berwick Viewfinders, Eastern Suburbs Photographic Society and Maroondah Photographic Society. The clubs take turns to host the event and Waverley does it in April during the odd number years and when Waverley is not hosting the 4 Club it receives a letter from the host club asking for entries.

We are invited to enter 6 colour, 6 monochrome and 6 digital prints. There is an individual medal given to the maker of the best entry in each class while all the scores are tallied up in each section and the top club in each section is awarded a trophy. Last time around Waverley won everything except for one trophy. Can we do it again? Come along and see.

When you see 4 Club Selection Night listed in the program bring along some prints and or digital for everybody to have a look at. General consensus decides which entries are chosen and we try to spread the entries between as many makers as possible. When we do host the 4 club comp we move into the Community Centre on the corner of Stephenson’s Road and Miller Crescent. If you look out of the kitchen window in Wadham House and across the car park you are looking at the Community Centre.

Please bring a plate of food with you and arrive early as we need some equipment carted across to the Community Centre.

As a final favour could I ask you all to make an effort to introduce yourselves to at least one person that you do not recognise? The whole point of these interclub comps is to get out there and share the love so to speak. Everybody there is there because they all share a common passion so why not spread it around?

The Waverly Camera Club is expressly requested to join the Merrimack Valley Camera Club (MVCC) as a participant in the 29th annual George W. Glennie Nature Interclub Exhibition. The judging will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2009. The submission closing date for the Exhibition is Tuesday, March 24, 2009.

Although a Best Wildlife award will be given, this is a single section Exhibition. Each club’s images will be distributed throughout 10 rounds. Judging will be conducted on a round by round basis.

The Exhibition web site (www.glennie-exhibition.com) is the primary means of completing an entry form and submitting a club’s images. The vertical Submissions Table is located on the right side of the Home Page and contains three options. “Instructions” provide detailed information concerning the submission of the entry fee, the on-line registration form and the uploading of images. “Registration Form” enables you to directly enter the club identification, the club coordinator’s contact data and the images names and their makers. “Image Submissions” is the means by which copies of the images are uploaded to the web site.

The “Instructions” option also provides information for submitting entries via postal mail. By prior arrangement with the Exhibition Chair, Email may be used to send images and the Registration Form.

For your convenience, some of the more pertinent information is listed below.

o) A club may enter a total of 10 digital images; but no more than two images per maker.

o) Whether they are from scanned slides or digitally captured, images which have previously won Glennie awards are ineligible for re-submission. This exclusion also applies to those images which are near duplicates or so close that they might reasonably be considered identical.

o) The PSA Nature definition will be used. It is available on the Exhibition Home Page.. Manipulation is limited by PSA guidelines. Wildlife eligibility is discussed as part of the PSA Nature definition.

o) Maximum allowable dimensions (in pixels): 1024 horizontal (width); 768 vertical; (height), regardless of image orientation – portrait or landscape.

o) Maximum allowable file size: 1 Megabyte (MB).

o) Images received that are oversized will be adjusted by the Glennie staff. The composition will not be changed, however there may be some loss of quality.

o) Image files must be in JPG/JPEG format.

o) Categories: Amphibians, Birds, Botany, Insects, Land and Seascapes, Mammals, Marine Life and Reptiles. Some categories will be sub-divided, dependent upon the number of entries received.

o) Awards will be presented to the clubs having the four highest cumulative scores.

o) Plaques will be awarded to the best images in each category. A select number of Merit Awards will be given, based on the number of entries in each category. Some high scoring images not otherwise recognized will be presented Honor Awards. Also, each judge will select their favorite from the high scoring images not otherwise receiving an award; those images will be given a plaque. The Exhibition Chair will make a selection, as well, and present a plaque, courtesy of the Yankee Photographic Society.

o) The entry fee, covering all 10 club images, is $15 USD. Payment may be made in cash, by check drawn on a US bank (payable to the Merrimack Valley Camera Club) or by international postal money order (payable to Charlie Burke). Send the payment to the Exhibition Chair.

If you have questions or wish additional information, please do not hesitate to contact the Exhibition Chair.

We hope you will join us and help make this a truly outstanding Exhibition and Nature Showcase. We are looking forward to receiving your images.

Charlie Burke, PPSA

President, Merrimack Valley Camera Club
