September’s Open Competition Results

by webmaster on Sep.07, 2009, under Monthly competitions

Waverley Camera Club’s monthly photography competition for September was held on Tuesday the 1st September 2009 and was judged by Pele Leung. The competition topic was ‘Open’ and there were a total of 86 images submitted to the competition, 51 EDI and 35 Prints.

Pele was excellent in his judging of the images, giving essential feedback where needed and he also dealt out the odd compliment as well. Pele’s awards of Merit and Highly Commended are listed below along with the Winners of the four categories. Pele treated us to three of his AV’s after the competition was concluded which were just stunning, especially the Melbourne at Night presentation.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Pele for judging our competition and for sharing his AV’s; with us, I know I speak for everyone when I say that we all had a great night. Also, thank you to all of you who took time to enter the competition and congratulations to the prize getters.

Tuesday, September 1st is our main “Club Night” where the monthly competition entries are judged.

The theme for this month’s competition was “Open” and our judge on the night will be Pele Leung. Pele will also be giving a presentation on the evening of his own very interesting and unique photography work.

It promises to be a great night. We have a record number of entries this month, particularly in the “B” grade, so get there early and listen and learn from our judge’s comments.

Don’t forget, Tuesday is also the closing date for submission of your entries for next month’s competition. Bring your prints to the club and submit your EDI images via e mail. The theme for the October competition is “Blue”. If you haven’t yet prepared your entries, you stll have time!

Submitting Images to WCC’s EDI Competitions

by Dave Sumner on Jul.08, 2009, under Monthly competitions

Here is a quick reminder that images submitted to the EDI competitions including the EDI versions of prints need to be resized to 1024 pixels wide x 768 pixels high.

The two dimensions are NOT interchangeable and any image that is above 768 pixels high after it has been resized is too big. The best solution is when resizing the images set the height to 768 first and then check the width dimension. If the width is now below 1024 pixels then you are okay but if the width is still over 1024 pixels then you then need to resize the width to 1024 pixels. As long as you have the ‘constrain proportions’ or ‘maintain aspect ratio’ enabled, then there will be no problem as the image will adjust itself accordingly and the height will be below 768 pixels.

I am creating a document to show you how to do this in Photoshop, Elements 7 and Light-room and this will be available on the Tech Help BLOG ASAP. There will also be a further session at the club meeting to help alleviate any problems that you may be having.

Upcoming competition

by webmaster on Jun.25, 2009, under Monthly competitions

The subject for the next competition is: Still Life/Table Top.

This means that all your entries must be either a Still Life or a Table Top setup.

A still life is something that you have set up yourself. Just like the old still life paintings the subject can be whatever you choose. It could be a vase of flowers, a bunch of shells, a bottle of wine or anything else that takes your fancy. The object is for you to come up with a pleasing composition with however many subjects you put in your picture.

Table top photography is much the same as still life but encompasses more. The shots taken at the sound triggered flash workshop would qualify as table top. Be aware that if everyone enters a shot of a balloon bursting it could make for a very repetitive judging.
