4-Club Late 2014 – Results

On the same night as the October competition, the 4-Club Interclub competition was held at Eastern Suburbs Camera Club’s new club rooms in Blackburn. Unfortunately due to miscommunication, Ringwood hadn’t entered and the night ended up being a 3-club event. WCC did as well as ever although we only retained one of the trophies instead of the two we had won earlier in the year. Although everyone as usual contributed to the overall scores, I would like to mention that Interclub rookie, Jason Roy Price scored 13 Points for his image Inside the Bean, well done Jason.

Here are the results starting with members special awards:

* Highly Commended (Colour Prints) – Slow Morning Cat Bay – Vicki Moritz
* Highly Commended (Mono Prints) – Iesha – Cuc Chong
* Highly Commended (Projected) – On the Way Home – Felix Shparberg

WCC – Fantastic Results for 24th Eastern Interclub September 2014

The 24th Eastern Interclub Competition was held on Wednesday 17th September 2014 with a total of 8 clubs taking part. Once again WCC’s members have risen to the challenge with their fantastic photography and I have to say that there is the usual mix of our fine photographers in the pot including Craig Francisco who as always has done brilliantly as has Tuck Leong. But, before we get to the results I want to add a special mention for Anne Ramus with her image Seagulls Stacked Up, well done Anne in what was I think, your first interclub. Also there were a few other newer members taking part this time such as Geoff Shaw with his image City of Gold, Oswin Antio’s image Living on a Prayer and Hai Thi Nguyen with Morning’s Taggerty.

It is unfortunate that I couldn’t make the Eastern Interclub myself however, I have been given the results by the President and all I can say is a huge WELL DONE to those people whose images were representing Waverley. Particularly the members listed above who also achieved individual awards. The results are as follows:

The Overall Club Results

As you can see, all the individual club members image scores are added together to give a score in each section for each club. Then each section is added together to give an overall club score. Therefore, with 179 points WCC were overall winners along with 61 points in Small Prints and 59 points in EDI making WCC top scorers in both of those sections. We also had 59 points in Large Prints making WCC 4th with 1st place only being 3 points ahead.

Individual Results

I’ve only listed the members scores here for those with individual awards, to see everyone’s scores please see the gallery HERE

Large Prints – Craig Francisco – North Wharf SunsetMERIT

Small Prints – Anne Ramus – Seagulls Stacked Up  – MERIT

Small Prints – Craig Francisco – Sleeping Giants – SECOND PLACE

EDI – Tuck Leong – Concentration SECOND PLACE

Some of you may have noticed that there are several blank spaces in in the Small Print section of the results.  This has been the case for several years now and many clubs find it difficult to get members to print small versions of their images and therefore don’t enter. VAPS also had a small print section in their interclub competition until last year when they dropped this section. The small print section was used when printing was only really available in labs and amateur photographers didn’t have access to larger format printing as they do today. With that in mind, I am told that the Eastern Interclub will be dropping the small print section for 2015 and replacing it with a monochrome section.

Again, well done top all the WCC members that took part.

Definition of ‘Photo Travel’

For over 40 years the Photographic Society of America (PSA) has had a division for Photo Travel images, it is their definition that we are using for our November ‘Photo Travel’ competition.

In 2013 the PSA revised the wording of their definition to be:

“A Photo Travel image must express the feeling of a time and place, and portray a land, its distinctive features or culture in its natural state. There are no geographical limitations. Closeup pictures of people or objects must include distinguishable environment. Techniques that add to, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping, are not permitted. All adjustments must appear natural. Conversion to full monochrome is acceptable. Derivations, including infrared, are unacceptable.”

We are now using this version for our November competition, there is no substantive difference between the pre-2013 and current definitions.

Both versions of the definition include the “natural state” qualifier and we have received a couple of queries as to what that means. Fortunately there was an article in the PSA Journal explaining the full definition which clarified:

“…in its natural state means that what we see is what we shoot. Like Photojournalism and Nature, Photo Travel is essentially a documentary media; our goal is to portray the truth of a situation. When we change or arrange elements in a scene for photography, to that extent our photograph becomes untrue. Consider set-up shoots. They usually are well planned; but the final result is not a real record of what existed there. What to look for in a photo travel photograph with people is spontaneity. Set-ups are the enemy of spontaneity. You may have good results with a set-up; if so, enter that image in an open division. Keep your photo travel images a natural state.”

The full article (PDF 1MB) is worth reading to get a complete understanding of the definition.

VAPS Interclub Results – Geelong 2014

Not many Waverley members attended the convention this year, I hadn’t heard of anyone who was attending either the lectures or the dinner. However, there is still the matter of the interclub results and we have done exceedingly well again. I’ll break down the results into and individual and team scores. I must again say a very big thank you to the image selection team and the hard working coordinator, Donna Clark. Donna runs around coordinating the selections, picking up the images and ensuring that they get to VAPS on time. All of this in her own time and at her own expense, the results you see here are largely because of Donna’s relentless efforts.

First we have the results from the Audio Visual entries, then the prints and Electronic Images.

You can assume that because of the manner in which the images are judged, they were picked in the first instance on their initial impact and then with greater scrutiny once they had made some sort of grade. Only images receiving 15, 14 or 13points normally go on to be scrutinised further. This makes this competition a little harder than other interclub competitions because not only do the images need to have initial impact, they have to be able to stand up against close scrutiny also.

Here are the results:

Thanks again everyone for their outstanding images and even more outstanding hard work. 5 years ago we didn’t even enter any images into the VAPS Interclub and now were scoring high and doing well. Keep it up for 2015 and we can be the TOP club for 2015.

Thanks

4-Club Results – How Did We Fare?

Another great result for Waverley, around 18 Waverley members in attendance and great hosts with Berwick being very welcoming. The judge David Burren did a great job giving some great feedback on technical errors and improvements whilst still managing to impart some of the artistic elements within the images. You may or may not know that 4-Club is about the 4 competing club’s overall scores rather than being about individuals. There are 3 trophies, 1 for each section. However, there are awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each section, the latter two being just bragging rights.

Here are the place getters for Waverley:

Open Prints

2nd Place – Craig Francisco – Sunset on North Wharf

Mono Prints

3rd Place – Felix Schparberg – Leonard
1st Place – Cuc Chong – Docking

Well done to all three place getters and Cookie for a 1st place. Thank goodness for that, no more mention of being a ‘B Grader’ at last.

So to the overall scores and Waverley won 2 of the 3 trophies outright:

Obviously the photographers deserve the majority credit for this great result however, thanks and a real big appreciation go to Donna Clarke who painstakingly collates all of the panel who pick the images and then she runs around collecting all of the images and gets them off to the host club. Without Donna, none of this would have happened.

Thanks
