4 – Club Interclub Competition – 14th April 2014

The 4-Club Competition will be held at Berwick Viewfinders Club Rooms, details are below. For new members and those of you who don’t know what 4 – Club is then please read on.

Bi-annually, Waverley CC takes part in a photography competition between four local (ish) camera clubs called ‘4-Club’ and every second year we host this event. You may or may not know that WCC has a small sub committee that selects members images to represent WCC in this competition and we have  gallery of selected images HERE

The sub-committee tries very hard to vary the entries selected to be from different members and we are always happy when someone new has their image chosen. We try to select images that are fairly recent and definitely one’s that we think will do well in competition. You might think that a club monthly winner is automatically chosen to represent us at this competition but this isn’t always the case. Once an image has been chosen and entered into 4-Club it cannot be re-submitted a second time.

With regards to the competition night, this varies from club to club however, the basic concept is the same. ANYONE who is a club member can attend and you will get to see a competition similar to our own monthly event. The difference here is that we get to see what other clubs are doing and how we stand up against their images. Please don’t think that if you go along that you will be there on your own in a room full of strangers because WCC always has a good following at these events. Afterwards there is opportunity to see the images up close, supper is usually provided and you can get to meet some other photographers from other clubs if you wish.

So come along and see how it all works, details for the event are as follows:

Date – 14th April 2014

Lightroom export settings for club competitions

For members that use (or are thinking about using) Lightroom, here is an example of the settings to use when exporting images for our monthly competitions:

lightrom-export-preset

The file settings section is where you set it to JPEG, ensure the colour space of the exported file is sRGB (doesn’t matter what your source image is, the export will be sRGB) and enable a file size limit (JPEG quality is automatically adjusted to achieve this which is why quality is greyed out).

In the image sizing section is where you size the image. These settings will produce an exported image that fits within our maximum width of 1400 pixels and maximum height of 1050 pixels while maintaining the aspect ratio.

If you had to severely crop your image (eg you didn’t have a long enough zoom) then the don’t enlarge setting will not stretch out a small image to the 1400×1050 size that could result in a blurry or blocky image..

Ignore the resolution option. This is only a suggestion for printing, it has no impact on how many pixels are in the image. In general, unless you are scanning from or printing to a physical surface, don’t worry about ppi or dpi.

Once you have your export settings entered, you can save them as a user preset so that next time you just select the preset instead of going into the export dialog.

End of Year Results for 2013

Tuesday 3rd Dec was WCC’s End of Year Function which had a new format this year. We combined End of Year Night with the Xmas Dinner and had one big function with a heavily subsidised meal. The night went very well with 81 members attending, which has to be some sort of record. I know that a few years ago when we had to move the competition nights to the Craft Room because Wadham House was full, I remember thinking we’ll never fill this room and now we are packing out the Main Hall, where to next Jeff’s Shed, MCG???

There was a lot of effort went into making last night a success and the committee deserve a big thanks for the effort put in to make the night run as smoothly as it did and also a big thanks to all who helped clean up afterwards. However, there is one big thank you that has to be said again and that is to Paul Spence, the club’s new president without who the night would not have gone so well. His relentless efforts with AV’s, slideshows and Brownlow type scoring just made the night go so well. We must also say a very very large thank you to Danny Beganoff and CR Kennedy’s who so very kindly donated all of those raffle prizes. Danny goes to great lengths to support the club and we are all pleased that he could turn up and join us for the evening.

There were quite a few funny comments made during the night but the best thing of all was Stuart giving Andy a kiss on the head, his face is just a picture.

Of course the night wouldn’t have been a success without the members and their relentless efforts to enter the monthly competitions. The skills of the members just shone out from the screen and the prints on the table, it really is a talented group we have. Of course not everyone can be a winner and not everyone can win the coveted ‘President’s Trophy’, but Fred Seeber did and not for the first time either. This and AV’s are obviously Fred’s forte, well done Fred and watch those glasses in my coffee.

Now of course the night is all about the End of Year Competition and the three categories for this, EDI Images, Open Prints and Mono Prints and there is one name mentioned about three times too many but nevertheless, it is what it is and here are the winners of the EoY competition as judged by Stuart De Silva and Landon Abbot of S M L XL

Of course, President’s Trophy and the End of Year Competition aside, we had the aggregate winners for the year and it was a hotly contested affair this year especially in A Grade. I have to say, watch out Vicki Rosie and Pete, Cuc Chong and Anthony Yap are coming to win your trophies from you next year. But joking aside, we have some of the best amateur photographers in Victoria and dare I say it, Australia in our club and we are very lucky to have even more talent on the way up. All that said here are the winners of the aggregate points for 2013.

A Grade Print – Rosie Hughes
A Grade EDI – Pete Davies, Vicki Moritz
B Grade Print – Craig Francisco

All winners together

I’m sure that you will agree that this was one of the best events we have ever held so we may see it repeated next year, fingers crossed. Also if this is what we’re doing at the end of this year, goodness knows what 2014 is going to be like, it looks very promising indeed.

From all of the committee, I would just like to say a very big thank you to all of our members for their support throughout 2013 and we look forward to seeing you next year. Have a very merry Christmas and a joyous New Year and may your Canon camera wishes come true, especially yours Cookie.

See you in 2014

Dave Sumner

4-Club Interclub Night – Results

If you were at the club last night for the 4-Club competition then you will know that we were treated to an exceptional 4-Club night only marred by the lack of WCC members in attendance. That said, the room was still pretty much full and once Paul’s AV started showing the colour and Monochrome prints, mouths were open and the silence was amazing and this was carried through into the EDI section . Considering that this was Paul’s first night in front of the club as President, he did exceptionally well and I can only add that this was by far the best 4-Club event I have been to.

Well done to our individual winners, Felix, Alan and Rosie and to all our entrants for the overall club scores.

I know we thanked people on the night however, I would just like to say another huge ‘thank you’ on behalf of the members to Paul and Donna for their tireless hard work in organising the event and making it the huge success that it was. I really don’t think that people realise how much work goes into getting these things off the ground never mind making them a success. I would also like to thank the members who brought a plate of food, the spread was excellent as always and it is largely due to those tireless partners who come along at every event and support the club. Special thanks must go to Mrs Mallet and Mrs Armitage who without being asked spent most of the evening helping in the kitchen and organising the food.

Thanks again if you attended last night and if you didn’t, you missed another great WCC event the results of which are below:
