Waverley Camera Club

Tonight at Waverley Camera Club is competition night where our judges, master photographers Andrew and Fiona Harrison will be looking through our images and providing valuable feedback on how to make the images better. Of course they will also be rewarding the entrants with the usual merits, highly commended and winning images and if you are a member then you know what to expect and can be assured that it will be a great night. For those who are only thinking of joining or are not sure about coming, please come along and pay us a visit we definately don’t bite. We pride ourselves on being a friendly and welcoming club and you will be made to feel most welcome. There is no audience participation required and no pressure to join, just come along and have a look at what we do. Hey, we’ll even give you a cup of coffee or tea and a biscuit to show our gratitude of your visit and you’ll be treated to a slideshow of great images submitted to the competition by our members from absolute beginners to seasoned ‘experts’

Of course if you have been before and do wish to join us or you are still not sure, then Jill will advise you on all thing Waverley CC and even get you to have a quick chat with some of the members to answer any questions that you may have.

Wednesday 27th July saw the Knox Interclub Monochrome Competition held at Baronia West Primary School. This year there were eight clubs entered into the competition and 110 images split into 30 small prints, 40 large prints and 40 EDI images. Whilst Waverley didn’t manage to attain any place getters this year we didn’t disgrace ourselves. There were only 18 awards given 3 x 3rd place, 3 x 2nd place and 3 x 1st places plus a further 9 Highly Commendeds of which Waverley secured 4 as follows:

Dave Sumner – Rodeo – Large Print Highly Commended
Vicki Moritz – Puppies – Large Print Highly Commended
Alan Scott – Hay-Field – EDI Highly Commended

I would like to say thank you to all of the Waverley Members who attended, we nearly outnumbered the host club I think. I would also like to thank those members who provided us with prints and EDI’s to enter.

The next competition is the Eastern Interclub in August, watch this space for details, hopefully with the correct date this time.

You have to agree that we have been extremely lucky over the last year with the judges that have been organised for us. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that we are the only amateur club in Victoria and possibly the whole of Australia that has had regular judges of this calibre from the professional photgraphy world. It is not only that we have had the cream of the crop all the way from Master Photographer Ian McKenzie through to the 2010 AIPP Photographer of the Year, Peter Coulson but it just gets better and better. I am very pleased to announce to you all that in August we have not one but two Master Photographers, Andrew and Fiona Harrison. They will be judging our Open competition and I think I can safely say that we will be in for yet another treat when we see their presentation. Andrew started Passion8 Photography with Fiona in 2001. Andrew’s Sales & Marketing background has created a very solid business base for a thriving photographic studio. Andrew’s amazing creativity is evident in his competent shooting style and graphic design capabilities. His skill and flair for wedding photography is outstanding and has achieved many awards within the photographic industry.

Fiona completed her photography studies in 1989, yes 19 years ago! She is incredibly enthusiastic about capturing the moment with her wedding, baby, children & family portraits. Fiona’s patience with children is endearing and results in the most delightfully, natural & candid portraits of childhood. Fiona’s clients just keep coming back, from their wedding through to their teen’s portraits. Her images are her passion!

Always fancied taking images in the Melbourne Town Hall and Offices or what about the Origin Roof Top Garden? Well now you can if you attend the Melbourne Open House event on the weekend 30-31st JULY.

To those who didn’t attend the Monochrome workshop last night, you missed a very good session led by Pete which studied what makes an image a good B&W or monochrome. We studied 100 of the best B&W/Monochrome images before going into the different ways used to convert images from the ins and outs of B&W in camera to the many methods of PhotoShop. Pete treated us to some demonstrations with the assistance of Warren’s Photoshop Group members who had been working on this very subject the night before. We were able to compare several different methods, their advantages and disadvantages as well as visually compare the results. Anyone who simply desaturates an image to make it B&W should have been there to see why this isn’t the ideal method.

We also touched on creating monotone, duotone, tritone and quadtone images, where we would possibly use these and how the results differ.
