4-Club Interclub Night – Results

If you were at the club last night for the 4-Club competition then you will know that we were treated to an exceptional 4-Club night only marred by the lack of WCC members in attendance. That said, the room was still pretty much full and once Paul’s AV started showing the colour and Monochrome prints, mouths were open and the silence was amazing and this was carried through into the EDI section . Considering that this was Paul’s first night in front of the club as President, he did exceptionally well and I can only add that this was by far the best 4-Club event I have been to.

Well done to our individual winners, Felix, Alan and Rosie and to all our entrants for the overall club scores.

I know we thanked people on the night however, I would just like to say another huge ‘thank you’ on behalf of the members to Paul and Donna for their tireless hard work in organising the event and making it the huge success that it was. I really don’t think that people realise how much work goes into getting these things off the ground never mind making them a success. I would also like to thank the members who brought a plate of food, the spread was excellent as always and it is largely due to those tireless partners who come along at every event and support the club. Special thanks must go to Mrs Mallet and Mrs Armitage who without being asked spent most of the evening helping in the kitchen and organising the food.

Thanks again if you attended last night and if you didn’t, you missed another great WCC event the results of which are below:

The Story Behind the Photo

“Don’t put up with rubbish” and “Don’t put rubbish up” are the two lessons Cuc Chong learnt from this Lakes Entrance image.

In preparation for the landscape competition in May this year, I set out to take some landscape images. We arrived in Bairnsdale in the late afternoon and a local told us that Ninety Mile Beach is great for sunrise and sunset, so we decided that we would head there early the next morning.

When we arrived at the Ninety Mile Beach, I was disappointed as the scene was filled with endless sand and water, there wasn’t anything interesting. I decided to climb up the sand dune and the scenery wasn’t much better. I remembered Pete Davies said “make the extraordinary out of the ordinary” at the end of the beginners course, so I decided to apply that insight.

I set my camera on the tripod as low as possible, using gradual neutral density 0.6 to balance the light between the sky and the foreground. I was too excited about capturing the emerging light and that I didn’t see the rubbish that lay within the shot.

During the competition judging night, I was hammered left, right and centre about how a good image was ruined by the rubbish within. Hence lesson 101 ‘Don’t put up with rubbish’.

Lake

I could have removed the rubbish during post production, but at that stage my editing skill in Photoshop or Lightroom was limited and I couldn’t rescue the image from its fallen grace. I should have been more patient and waited until my editing skills were good enough to remove the rubbish. The image has been published without correction and it’s irreversible, hence lesson 102 ‘Don’t put rubbish up’.

Editor’s Note: Irrespective of the “rubbish” in the foreground, the WCC selection panel for the Eastern Interclub 2013 competition entered Cuc’s photo in the EDI section where it was awarded a merit. Well done Cuc, not only did you learn two valuable lessons but also a merit in an inter club competition against very good competition. Thanks for sharing your experience.

AV Group Special Guest – 8th October 2013

On the 8th October, the AV group will be hosting a very special guest , Heather Prince who is a multi award winning AV Maker from Geelong. In the world of AV, which is relatively new in the world of photography, a multi award winning guest is a rare beast indeed yet WCC has managed to track one down for your enjoyment. I know Heather quite well and I can assure you that you are in for a great night, Heather is one of the most warm and friendly people you will ever meet and she is coming all the way from Geelong to pass on her knowledge for the benefit of WCC members. So don’t miss out on this special treat and come along to Wadham House on the 8th, details of meetings and location are HERE

The Story Behind the Photo

Here’s another of my long winded stories about a photo, if anyone else has anything that they would like to tell us about then please email it to me with a jpeg image of the ‘Photo’ in question and I’ll ensure it gets place on the website and the Facebook page.

23rd Eastern Interclub Results

The 23rd Eastern Interclub commenced at 8pm to a packed room and Waverley certainly did not disgrace itself with members attending. The slideshow commenced and we all sat waiting with anticipation looking on at the usual mix of camera club images. One of the problems of being in a club that starts with W is that we usually have to wait until the end to see our images and tonight was no exception only being tipped to last by Yarra Ranges. As usual we did very well, the Judge Lin Richards showing his usual professionalism in picking the best images and we didn’t have to wait long to get results 1st place (Vicki Moritz), 2nd place (Ron Weatherhead) and a merit (Rosie Hughes) in the small prints followed by a merit in the large prints (Rosie Hughes) and two merits (Cuc Chong and Dave Sumner) and a 1st place (Richard Dabbous) in EDI.

Points for each image entered by WCC can be found in the gallery HERE

Well done everyone and once again a big huge massive thanks to Donna Clarke for doing all the work in getting this together.

The overall results were as follows:
