Sunday Outing 7th July – Mornington Peninsula

As you know, the July Sunday outing was destined to be a ‘trip to the Snow’ but a visit to Mt Donna Buang last weekend revealed that was no snow at all. We have since discovered that the Victoria ‘Snow Watch’ website doesn’t start reporting snowfall until the 24th June. Therefore, we have decided that there would be more chance of snow in August and we are switching around the Mornington Peninsula outing with the snow trip.

So, Sunday 7th July 2013 will be a trip to the Mornington Peninsula and after exhaustive talks between the President and the Secretary we have decided to make a day of it. So, as members you have a choice as follows:

Option One: Meet at 06.30 prompt at the Cape Shanck car park for a walk down to Pulpit Rock for the 7.37 sunrise. Then back to the cars and on to Flinders to meet up again at 10.30 for brunch followed by some jetty and rocks photography on the shoreline. Then between 1.30 – 2.30pm we will move to the bay side of the peninsula and possibly visit Arthur’s Seat and Sea Winds Gardens for a sunset shoot at 5.13pm

Option Two: Same as option one but missing out the sunrise shoot and meeting at 10.30 at Flinders in the car park near the Art Gallery (see image).

***NOTE*** Just to clarify, the two options are not a vote to choose one or the other, they will both be happening and you can choose which you wish to attend. Option 1 is for the real die hard photographers amongst us and Option 2 is for the part time happy snappers.

Hope to see you there

Sunday Outing – City Laneways Report

It was early on Sunday morning when I found myself with a quickened step up Swanston Street toward the State Library, I was hurrying as I was running a little late but I knew there would be people waiting because I had already had two phone calls. As I rounded the last building before the library I saw not two but seventeen members waiting patiently, wow!! what a turn out.

We quickly realised that none of the organisers were going to turn up so we made a group decision to head into Melbourne Central to photograph the shot tower before the crowds gathered. This was a great decision because the place was about deserted and the security man had no problems at all with us being there. There were club members by the escalators, down in the basement and up by the cinema. All in all we had every angle covered.

Hello There

From there it was onto the Old Mint building where we explored the gardens then onto Flagstaff Gardens which didn’t look that appealing so we headed to Victoria Market. In the market we took lots of images and then we gathered for coffee and a break in the food area. From here some people went home and others headed back towards the State Library where we visited laneways. Once back at the library we went inside and photographed the reading room and investigated the galleries.

Now it was 2pm and after another well deserved coffee we headed back home having had a great day out. Sorry a lot of you missed out, there’s always the next Sunday outing which will be a sporting event of some sort.

Here is a link to the GALLERIES

4-Club Interclub Results

The 4-Club Interclub competition was held last night, 17th Apr at Maroondah’s Club Rooms in Ringwood. The night was quite hotly contested between Berwick Viewfinders, Maroondah Photographic Society, Eastern Suburbs Camera Club and Waverley Camera Club. There were some very good images presented and the judge Rob Sloane did his best to tell us about each image. Thanks you to everyone who contributed to the competition and to Paul Spence, Vicki Moritz, Rosie Hughes, Dave Sumner and especially Donna Clarke for the efforts in getting the images together. The results were as follows:

Club – EDI Images – Mono Prints – Colour Prints

Berwick – 62Pts – 64Pts – 71Pts (=1st)

Marroondah – 68Pts – 66Pts – 61Pts

Estn Suburbs – 69Pts (1st) – 67Pts (1st) – 57Pts

Waverley – 66Pts – 60Pts – 71Pts (=1st)

A very special mention must go to Vicki Moritz, our star photographer who scored a 1st in EDI for Southern Cross Station and a 2nd in Open Prints for St Kilda Dawn (my absolute favourite image), well done Vicki.

Sunday Outing Report – Bellarine Peninsula

I arrived 10 minutes late at the meeting point at Barwon Heads to find 4 members looking distraught as they thought they were the only ones there. I had seen others about as I looked for a parking space and in the end there were 9 of us. We discussed what to do and agreed that regardless of where anyone went, we would meet up at Clifton Springs at 5pm for the sunset (if there was one). After a few shots under the bridge a few went on to point Lonsdale whilst several of us went along and made something of the waves that were crashing into the sea wall past the famous ‘At The Heads’ café.

After a while taking shots here, of the 4 of us that remained at Barwon Heads, 3 of us went further on to Point Lonsdale, whilst 1 went to another location. the 3 of us at point Lonsdale set up on the pier to shoot back towards the lighthouse. the light wasn’t brilliant but we did get a slight glimmer of nice light for about 30 seconds.

Time was getting on and at 4.20 we set off on the 30 minute drive to Clifton Springs saw us there for 4.50 and just in time to setup for a few images of the old jetty. The sunset wasn’t brilliant and we only got a sliver of nice sky on the horizon but the clouds worked well for our images. The stormy looking sky working well for a lot of our shots. We were all secretly hoping for some lightning from the approaching black skies and although we did hear a rumble of thunder, the clouds dispersed and we were rewarded with some great clouds as a backdrop instead. I re-affirmed that my next purchase has to be some graduated ND filters after wrestling with my variable ND affair which I have found to be not worth the money I paid for it, thanks HOYA.

All in all, we had a really good time and it was worth the trip, just a shame it wasn’t supported by a few more members.

Please remember that we now have a website for posting images from outings which can be found HERE

Annual Club BBQ – Brickmakers Park, Oakleigh

The Waverley Camera Club Annual BBQ will be held at Brickmakers Park on Tuesday 15th Jan 2013 at 6PM.

There is only one shelter and two tables so it would pay for you to bring any portable tables, chairs, picnic balnkets etc.. I have no idea how popular this place is so it's best to be prepared. The BBQ is electric and will be suitable for a total fire ban day. Please bring utensils and cleaning gear.

Please remember to bring your prints for the FEB 2013 Competition on this night.

If you are not going to the BBQ you can drop your prints to Pete (President) by calling 0403 803 299

Brickmakers Park can be found directly behind Oak Ford car sales which is at the intersection of Ferntree Gulley Road and Dandenong Road (Princess Highway). It seems the best way in and to find parking is along Stamford Road which is accessed from ferntree Gulley Road.

If you are travelling along Dandenong Road, turn east into Ferntree Gulley Road and take the first left after Oak Ford Car Sales into Stamford Road and the park is about 2- 300 mtrs on the left.

If you are travelling west along FTG Road there is a right turn filter lane just before the traffic lights at Dandenong Road.

You Can also access from Huntingdale Road by turning into Estelle Street immedately after Oakligh Golf Course, go to the end and turn left into Stamford Road and the park is about 400mtrs on your right.

First Sunday Outing Report of 2013 – NGV and the IPC

Welcome everyone to the first Sunday Outing report of 2013 where 7 members attended two exhibitions in the CBD at the National Gallery of Art and the Ian Potter Centre. Having had a few issues with email, we finally managed to get a message out to all members and Pete Davies and I met at the Atrium at Fed Square and sat and waited to see if anyone else turned up. One by one people arrived and the 7 of us, after a short chat about the Xmas festivities went into the IPC to purchase our tickets for the two exhibitions. Discovering that the first guided tour was for the Thomas Demand exhibition, we took a steady stroll to the NGV and duly queued waiting for the guide. Going around the exhibition we were amazed by the sheer effort that Demand had put into his work, recreating everything he photographed. I won't go into detail because the artist had demanded that people look at the exhibition before reading up on the work and i don't want to spoil it for anyone else who is planning a visit. I would recommend this exhibition to anyone but the free tour is worth the effort.

The guide spoke to us for an hour and at 12 noon at the end of the tour, we all headed to the Southbank for lunch and a chat. Having had lunch we took a slow walk to the IPC and waited for the tour which turned out to be the same guide. Jeff Wall is a much younger photographer and his work was presented partly using light boxes but her also used large format printing as opposed to Demand who has printed onto a clear poly surface. Wall's work was quite different to the offerings of Demand and it quickly became apparent that people were not as impressed with his images with some of the group wandering off from the tour as the guide tried to explain away his work. Some of his images were quite self explanatory, others you neede to have an artistic mind to interpret to which personally I struggled to see.

After the tour some people headed on their way whilst a couple of us took the opportunity to walk Melbourne's laneways which turned out to be a bit of an eye opener in places as there is quite a lot of building work going on. With regards to hosier Lnae, that area is now so much of a tourist attraction that it has been spoiled and not really worth a visit any more.

Thanks to all of the members that attended and hopefully we will see a few more to the next Sunday Outing.

Regards

Dave
