Portfolio projects for 2023

It’s time to get our portfolio projects for 2023 underway.

You will have received an email earlier this year outlining some of the changes to the portfolio rules, to allow more images, more creativity and more fun.

Our first meeting will be on Thursday 27th April 2023, from 7:30pm in the craft room at Mount Waverley Community Centre (the usual place we meet). This will be face-to-face, and there will be a reminder in the weekly Waverley Watson.

At this meeting I will cover:
1. a quick review of the 2022 portfolios with some feedback and general comments
2. an overview of how the portfolio projects will be run this year with an overview of the new rules
3. a quick overview of how you might approach your portfolio

I hope you have all started to think about your theme, and we will give some time to share what you are planning. Remember, the aim is to get support, ideas and directions from others. This is not a competition so as much as we can share, the stronger your portfolio will be.

ALL members are welcome, of all levels of photographic ability. Even if you are just curious, come along and get excited.

Celebrating Melbourne’s top secondary photomedia students in an exciting exhibition at MAPh

Our club aponsors a competition run by the Museum of Australian Photography (MAPh) for secondary students in honour of our dear departed friend Rosie Hughes. Please see below information about the launch of the exhibition on Wednesday 26th April 2023 at 6:00pm.

Celebrating its 15th year, TOPshots continues to highlight the strength of the photographic work being produced by students in Victoria’s high schools. The 14 artists selected for this year’s exhibition highlight a range of creative and experimental approaches to photography while exploring themes and ideas that are relevant to these young artists as they navigate their worlds and develop their creative responses.
MAPh is proud to have the opportunity to foreground and acknowledge these emerging artists while providing them with a vital platform to share and exhibit their work.

Photographing in the City with Matt Irwin – March 2023

On Tuesday 21st March 2023, renowned Street and Commercial Photographer Matt Irwin will take us on a walk through some interesting photographic places in the city.

Date: Tuesday 21st March 2023
Time: 6.30pm
Location: Under the big screen, Federation Square

What to bring:
Matt suggested a variety of lenses can be used to shoot street photography including zoom or fixed/prime (50mm or 35mm) lenses. As we are shooting in the night, a lens with a fast aperture of f1.8 or f2.8 are preferred. Matt prefers to shoot with 50mm or 85mm, sometimes even a zoom. However, he said the key is challenge yourself with whatever lens you have available. If anyone wants to use their own tilt-shift lens, please let me know so I can inform Matt. A tripod is not recommended as we will be walking.

Parking:
Parking is available at Federation Square Car Park after 4pm for $13.00. Street parking maybe available. Please check parking signs for hours. Public transport is another alternative.

RSVP: via email to Rebecca Kashyap by Saturday 18th March 2023

Moomba outing – Monday 13th March 2023

(might have time to catch up briefly over lunch from 12:50-1:25)
Meeting place: Outside the main entrance of NGV (to walk down Southbank BLVD together)
Camera gear: Zoom lens around 200 mm or longer
24-105 mm or portrait lenses for the atmosphere and parade
Tripod or filter for night shots such as fireworks etc if you plan to stay longer

It is recommended to take public transport as this is a public holiday, parking is quite challenging. If you come early, you might find free parking near Yarra River, close to Gate A and H of Botanic Gardens, otherwise, some paid parking near Flinders Station or Feb Square.

RSVP to Jennifer Sui via email by Friday 10th March 2023.

Hope to see many of you there as this is a major event, and you will find your favorite subjects to shoot easily.
