The unique Bunjil Place

Our February outing focused on architecture and it is amazing how many photographs you can capture of one building, especially if it is unique like Bunjil Place, Narre Warren.

The building has won many international architectural and design awards. The artistic structure represents an eagle with 2 huge wooden laminated legs standing in the foyer with an out stretched roof canopy, being the wings. It is a very large building. The name Bunjil has an Aboriginal connection. The overcast weather was ideal, with no harsh shadows; a humid but comfortable 21 degrees. The building enabled both external and internal photography. Fortunately for us there were few people using the building which allowed us free rein of our pursuit and of course a coffee which was also part of the plan.

This was an ideal Outing with our Set Subject of Architecture due in March. If you missed the Outing, it is worth a visit.

Portraits and laneways in Melbourne

The weather for our outing last Sunday was ideal, overcast with no sun or harsh shadows.

After a train trip into the city by most, we met under the clock at Melbourne Central and viewed the Iconic Women Exhibition, including images of Olivier Newton-John, Audrey Hepburn and Nicole Kidman, to name just a few. It gave us some inspiration in portrait/creative photography as most images had some sort of graphic added to them.

We stuck together, heading towards Fed Square via laneways and alleys, including Tattersalls Lane, Croft Alley, Duckboard/ACDC and Hosier Lane. Luckily we were able to experience the opening ceremony of a new restaurant in Tattersalls Lane; the cameras were clicking!

A coffee break on the way was also a must!

We were looking forward to sampling some French cuisine but the Fed in French Festival was cancelled due to poor weather conditions. Saturday had brought rain and hail on and off during the day. Never the less, there seemed to be a lot of images captured during our walk from Melbourne Central.

It was 12 noon so we enjoyed lunch together at the Rooftop Bar of Taxi; overlooking the Yarra and Southbank. The Outing was enjoyed by all.

Sunshine to hail at South Wharf

Whilst the weather for our recent South Wharf Outing wasn’t ideal for a stroll, it produced some interesting opportunities for us to photograph. We had everything from sunshine to hail which frightened a few off, but the dedicated were rewarded.

We met at the Melbourne Convention Centre during the later part of the afternoon and pretty well experienced hail immediately. Inside the Convention Centre seemed to be the place to be. This gave us some opportunities to capture the architecture of the building and at the same time shelter from the rain. The three levels gave us some interesting angles and an elevated view over the Yarra. After the rain the sun shone and created some spectacular reflections.

The glorious sunset at 5.41PM never arrived so we captured some shots around the South Wharf Marina during the ‘golden hour’ and then enjoyed dinner together at Hooks by the Yarra. The meal was excellent but I think the staff added to the experience.

The weather during the evening turned out to be delightful, so again we tried the upper level of the Convention Centre by night, with different effects. The Webb and Seafarers Bridges were also highlights.

We headed home at about 9.15PM to avoid the crowds from the football but could have stayed longer. The rain definitely contributed to a great Outing!

Burst mode at the motocross

Nineteen keen photographers attended the Motocross Outing last Saturday. We meet in the Bunnings, Vermont South car park at 9.15AM and walked to the Motorcross (about 200 metres).

The weather was blue skies all around but we would have preferred a little cloud cover. The Nunawading and District Motocross Club allowed us to access various ‘on track’ locations for close up action. OH&S vests and signed indemnity forms were a requirement.

The Outing gave us the opportunity to practice capturing sharp images of fast moving subjects and at the same time include some motion blur – challenging!

Burst mode appeared to be the choice of the day and so by lunch time, most had captured several hundred images; the action was non stop.

More images from the day can be found in the gallery.
