Sound Triggered Flash Night Report – 16th July 2013

This is the clubs third or fourth ‘Sound Triggered Flash Night’ and they just keep getting better and better. We had the room setup with a central table where everyone could get 360 degree access. The room was full of people and was a sea of tripod legs and we spread ourselves around fairly evenly spaced out. Then it was the usual go around the Nikons and turn off the focus assist lamp although this years big offender was George with his little Lumix point and shoot that insisted on emitting a horrid orange glow every time a button was pressed. However, there was a couple of other offenders with Fred Seeber having his pop up flash working at one point and all of wondering why the sound flash was going off early until a keen eyed person realised it was Fred’s flash.

We burst balloons, smashed light globes, set off party poppers, fired silly string, dropped coloured pencils and sprayed aerosols all in the name of photography and I must say that from what I saw, we got some great shots. As always the multi balloons with flour inside were pretty popular as was the water on the outside of the balloons.

The night shot by and before we knew it, the time had crept to 10.30 and we were still shooting away so it was a quick tidy up and off home after another very successful workshop. I hope you all got some great images and thanks have to go to Pete, Fred and Stephen for providing us with a great night, especially to Fred Bullock who did nearly all of the cleaning up.

Thanks and see you at the next club night.

Workshop Night – Sound Triggered Flash – Tue 16th July 2013

The workshop on Tuesday 16th is a ‘Sound Triggered Flash’ night where we freeze the action of balloons bursting, globes smashing and items exploding.

This is a practical workshop so please bring along:
– Your Camera
– Tripod
– Electronic\Cable Release (not essential, but handy)

Also could all users of NIKON cameras and cameras that are NIKON based please look at your manual and find out how to turn off the focus assist lamp that lights up in dark situations. This lamp will cause problems during the sound triggered flash process and they are not necessary.

Please could we ask that people bring along some old light globes if you have any.

For more information on what to expect have a look HERE

Thanks

Sunday Outing 14th Apr 2013 and Upcoming Workshop 16th Apr

The Sunday outing which was supposed to be last week is now on this coming Sunday (14th). It’s a bit of a tour of the Bellarine Peninsula. Meet at the bridge at Barwon Heads on the Barwon Heads side at 1pm. From there we’ll travel around the coast in an anti-clockwise direction to see what we can find with the aim of being at Clifton Springs by about 4:30pm. We’ll photograph what
WILL BE a magnificent sunset before heading back (maybe grabbing a bite to eat on the way).

The workshop this Tuesday will be downstairs at Wadham House and is aimed more at the lesser experienced members and those who want to find out about printing and matting. We are really keen to encourage printing especially for lesser experienced members so if you have considered it, then please come along. Also, if you have any questions about any of your camera gear, bring it along and we’ll attempt to sort it out. If you suspect your lenses aren’t focussing properly or you are having a hard time finding certain menu items or anything else that’s baffling you technically then come along on Tuesday night.

Thanks

Pete

Workshop Night Review – Tuesday 18th Sep 2012

Hi All,

I was once asked how I evaluate the worth of workshops, the answer is I dont evaluate. Generally the presenter does so I guess what the asker was really asking was it worth the money, effort and time not to mention the major take away “do the participants actually use the information”? Well from time to time I get little notes like this one …

A good night tonight Andy. I was writing madly. Stuart was helpful. What a whizz with P/S… But we could still understand what he was saying.

…and you know what chaps? Notes like this one make everything seem worthwhile. Yes, the time and effort I spend and indeed the time and effort the presenters spend. Next year I hope we will have many more workshops and the only one evaluating them will be you. All it takes is for Members like this one and you to actually be there. There were 30 of you in the room last night including some who were spending their first time with WCC. They asked when they could come again, and seemed surprised when I told them there was something on every Tuesday. How good is that! We have one more workshop event and that is the Photojournalist Judging nite on the 20th of November – but remember you will get nothing out of it unless you make some images, about 5-6 will do. Put them on a stick and bring them along, have them critiqued by an EXPERT.

Workshop Night – 17th July Table Top Photography in House Judging and Critique

The Table Top Photography in-house judging will happen on the 17th of July at about 7.30pm downstairs at Wadham House, see THIS PAGE for locations if you are unsure of where to meet.

This is a follow on from the table top presentation we had in May and we are very lucky to once again have Mr Adrien Smith who was our guide through this interesting exercise as a judge for the evening.  No points will be allocated to this event, but Mr Smith will talk about  your efforts and hopefully by the end of the evening we will have a much better understanding of what Table Top photography is and how we can improve the quality of our own efforts. For the many web-surfers among you, why not look up a few web-sites and surprise our guest judge!

Please bring along your table top images on USB or CD so we can show them on the night.

Cheers Andy

Coming Up on Tuesday Night – Framing Matting and Backing Workshop

Amendment Notice – Please note the amendment to the Vice President’s email regarding this workshop night, we will be matting and not mating the prints, sorry.    🙂

This time, at great expence to the management, your Committee is putting together a Framing Matting and Backing Workshop on Tuesday the 19 of June. Fred Bullock, Stephen Edmonds, Dave Sumner, John Hadfield and a couple of others have very kindly offered their time to do this thing and they will also briing along their tools – they will even let you use them for the evening.

What should you bring?
Bring a PRINT, one that you would like to mat all by yourself;
bring some matting material; Abacus Art in Warrigul Road will be able to help you with this, tell them that you are a member of the Waverley Camera Club,  they are used to Rosie and I coming in from time to time and I know that sometimes they like to give away the scrap bits which are quite useful to practice with and bring along some enthusiasm; there is nothing worse than to see that “…do I have to?” look on the faces of workshop participants. The folk helping you are experts in the area and are really willing to help.

So
What are we doing – Framing Matting and Backing Workshop
Why are we doing this – So that you can mount and display your own prints
When are we doing this – Tuesday 19th
What time are we doing this- 7.30 pm should be early enough
Where are we doing this – Wadham House, Wadham Pde, Off Miller Crescent, Mt Waverley

Workshop Night – Tuesday 20th March

We apolgise profusely but the members exhibition planned for the workshop night has had to be put back to later in the year so instead we have organised something to replace it. Therefore, Next Tuesday workshop is now a Members (and guests) Critique Night. So drop some of your images onto a USB memory stick, a portable Hard disk or even on a CD and bring them along with you. You would be aware that the WCC is fortunate to have very experienced judges and photographers as members of our club.  To this end-:

Pete Davies, Ron Weatherhed, Tuck Leong and Dave Sumner will be leading the critique of our images. We are also looking to make some real time adjustments to images to reflect our critique leaders suggestions. This is a members critique night, not a comp night so the emphasis is dialogue between you and our four leaders, not monologue. Please keep in mind we do have time restrictions and may not get to critique all members images.

At some time we all make the same mistakes, so on Tuesday it’s all about learning from our critique leaders.

Visitors, guests and potential new members are more than welcome to attend both workshop and competition nights, please make yourself known to our membership secretary, Jenny or any other committee members. Please see here for guidelines regarding visiting the club.

Nature Photography by Tuck Leong – A Great Night

After a bit of a stalled start with access to Wadham House, Tuck’s talk on Nature Photography was a huge success. A packed house sat enthralled as Tuck explained the difference between what are close up and real macro lenses. He also passed on hints and tips to get even the most staunch portrait photographer out there into the bush to shoot nature. Personally I enjoy nature photography and agree with Tuck regarding bird photography being a bit easier than shooting plants etc. Everyone else seemed to enjoy the evening including several new faces.

Thank you very much Tuck for entertaining us and the club looks forward to seeing all those nature based competition entries.
