Workshop Night – Tuesday 15th March 2011

Hi All,
there’s is a Composition workshop coming up this tuesday night which will begin at 7:30pm.
The venue is Wadham House, 52 Wadham Pde, Mt Waverley and we will be downstairs.
Composition is the art of framing an image and is quite easy to learn, you don’t need any technical know how whatsoever
and as such is the quickest way to start improving your photography.
If you have any images which don’t look as good as you were hoping they would it may be that the composition could be improved.
If that’s the case then bring your images along tomorrow night on a usb memory stick and we will see what can be done.

This exercise is open to all but could be especially handy for those of us just returned from the weekend’s trip to Aireys Inlet.
Chances are that some of the locations you photographed were also snapped by someone else and that the two sets of images will be very different
from each other. It will be interesting to discuss why one way works better than another or just to see if the audience is evenly split about their favourite compositions.

The first part of the evening will be taken up with a chat on the psychological aspects of how/why/what we see so if you’re thinking “oh I’ve read/heard all about composition before”
then make sure you get there on time because I doubt you will have.

Cheers,
Pete

Workshop Evening – Tuesday 15th Feb 2011

Coming up this Tuesday at Wadham House:

A presentation by the good people at

Nulab/PicPress/Creative PhotoWorkshops.

They are Australia’s premiere professional photographic laboratory, they
supply print, workflow and business solutions to the professional
photographic industry throughout Oceania and the world.
They offer a wide range of products and professional services.
On the night they will provide an interactive slideshow presentation
with displays of the products they offer. They will have information that
they can hand out to members. This hand out will include examples of
their printing capabilities, booklets, and each member who attends on
the night will receive a $25 credit towards Nulab!

On top of this Nulab is in a partnership with Creative Photo Workshops
who are Australia’s leading photographic tutoring company. CPW will give
a presentation on a certain aspect of photography, whether that be
portraiture, flash photography or wedding photography. At the time of
writing I haven’t been informed of what the topic is. They have found
that this combination has been very beneficial for club members, with
each member taking away something from the nights presentation.

Recently the team at Nulab, Picpress and Creative Photo Workshops
have given presentations at-
         Geelong Camera Club
         Frankston Photographic Club
         Southern Suburbs Camera Club
         Mornington Peninsula Camera Club

With all of these clubs thoroughly enjoying the presentation, they
have asked to return later this year.

***UPDATE***
Here’s a little more info on the workshop night coming up this Tuesday.
Not only will Nathan Muller be presenting but you will also be regaled by Shelton Muller.
For those who haven’t heard of Shelton Muller yet try googling him and see how many hundreds of pages come up.
I am very sorry that I won’t be there to see it, I will be at Pakenham Camera Club that night, so I want you all to go and then let me know what you think.
We may be able to get them back in November if we are lucky.

Cheers,

Pete Davies

WCC Christmas Dinner – How it Went

Hi all,

Especially to you who were unable to attend the Christmas dinner last night at Pescare’s Italian Restaurant, we missed you. Rosie and I had a great time!  The food was great.  The oysters were the most succulent, I had trouble getting through that huge steak and needed to leave some on the plate to save some room for the fabulous Tiramisu desert, and you know what?  The tea was served in a pot with sugar on the side and a little pot of real milk beside it;  The company was exemplary and the door prizes were the most interesting of all, particularly for the photographers who brought along their partners – they had 2 chances of winning.

Yes folk there were door prizes.

Mr Podger won for himself a box of Canon Fine Art Print paper, Mr Bullock won a Spyder monitor calibrator, Mr Burton’s prize was a great new camera bag and the prize of the prizes went to Mrs Reid who won a Manfrotto MonoPod for Stewart.  Fortunately the cost of these prizes was subsidised by the good folk at the Camera house who, although they were invited, were unable to be with us on the night.

If I had but one single criticism of the organisation of this singular event ladies and gentlemen it was that the evening was not sufficiently interactive.  We were warned of a full-house and the result of this was ‘noise’ – anyone got a noise ninja? Next time we will have our own room, there will be plenty of parking and we will be more interactive, so come prepared to play party games, wear silly hats and maybe even have your face painted.

Rosie and I wish all of you a Christmas full of love and the joy of family and friends; and a New Year crammed full of trips away, lots of AV material and camera club outings – speaking of which the first such outing – and don’t tell Pete Davies I told you this – is on the 2nd of January at sunrise a shoot at the Carlton Gardens!!  Be there or be SQUARE.  “True-dinks”.  But more of that on the website by the president himself.

Cheers and we will see U all next year.

Andy and Rosie Armitage

Image evaluation workshop

The workshop this Tuesday at Wadham House will be an image evaluation night.

It requires you to:

  1. be there
  2. bring some images

You can bring prints or EDI’s but we would prefer it if you emailed the EDI’s to comp@waverleycameraclub.org before lunchtime on Tuesday. Doing that will save a fair bit of hassle on the night.

If you have had images which were previously in a competition and you didn’t agree with what the judge said then this would be the ideal opportunity to get a second, third and fourth opinion. The main objective of the night will be to try and explain what judges are searching for when they look at our images.

Should be fun, you should learn something and hopefully improve your chances in a competition.

Visitors are most welcome.

see you there,

Cheers,
Pete

A fun night of sound-triggered flash photos

Wadham House resembled a packed media conference at Tuesday night’s sound-triggered flash workshop. After everyone had set up their camera gear, the night started off with a bang.

With Stephen Edmonds on props, Pete Davies at the light switch and some generous supplies from some forward-thinking members, many party-poppers were detonated at various angles and millisecond delay settings; no single one popped the same: some fizzled, a few backfired onto Stephen’s fingers, some hit Dave Sumner in the head – entertainment on its own! Using the club’s sound triggered flash system (built by Craig Terry), in a dark room with about 15 open camera shutters, those attending got the opportunity to photograph some unique action, especially towards the end of the night when positioning and timing of the flash had been perfected.

Some more members brought a few [increasingly rare] tungsten lightbulbs to smash up with a metal wrench (these glass bulbs proved surprisingly difficult to shatter!) Keeping to the pyrotechnic flavour of the night, the workshop finale involved an exploding apple that had to be seen to be believed.

A fun night of photography and many a laugh was shared between club members for another highly successful WCC workshop.

Sound triggered flash workshop

At the workshop this Tuesday we will be having another sound triggered flash workshop.

This was awesome fun last time and those that were there will know what sort of things to bring.

For those who weren’t: bring your camera and a tripod. Last time around we were setting off party poppers, smashing light globes and bursting balloons.

If you can think of anything else which happens at high speed and will set off a sound triggered flash please bring them along.

Another successful monthly workshop

Another successful monthly workshop got underway on Tuesday night with a steady crowd of around 20 members keen to brush up their skills or share advice for still life photography. The kitchen theme saw a variety of objects to capture.

A highlight of the night was Leif Anderson’s demonstration of his polarised light box, where plastic objects were lit and photographed through polarised filters with colourful effect.
